The AthenA Group was started 1989 by Steffie Allen after being inspired by a female colleague to create a course that “would teach women to lead, using their given talents rather than conforming to the general male model.” Out of that challenge, a new business was created. Allen’s sister, Carolyn Zeiger, PhD, a clinical psychologist, and business leader Kay Johnson joined Allen and the three named their new company The Athena Group, Inc., after the Greek Goddess Athena who worked in partnership with men. Their goal then and now was to help all women and all men become stronger, more empowering leaders.
That first innovative course has now been an ongoing product of AthenA for twenty years, with some 2000+ graduates. It is currently offered under the name “Management Excellence: It Begins with You” through Mountain States Employer’s Council.
The services of The AthenA Group expanded and were soon in demand as the idea that corporations would be more effective and better places to work if women’s perspectives were an integral part of corporate leadership took hold. National companies such as Warner Lambert, John Hancock, IBM, University of Denver, as well as international businesses such as Telstra, became clients.
The AthenA Group was instrumental in the creation of the Women’sVision Foundation—a volunteer organization promoting leadership training and connecting corporate women with other corporate leaders. Both organizations share the same vision of “Advancing Leadership for a Better Workplace and a Better World where the human spirit can thrive.”
Today The AthenA Group is made up of six principals and four additional consulting team members and continues to create and offer workshops and tools for leadership development, workforce transformation, culture change, team building and more.
